*** System Maintenance Sunday, August 24th ***

As part of a continual effort to improve SpotWalla's system infrastructure and to ensure SpotWalla operates at peak performance, we are performing some database maintenance Sunday, August 24th between 9PM and 10PM Sunday, August 24th America/Chicago.

During the upgrade all message interfaces will not be active. However, when SpotWalla comes back online all SPOT, InReach, Bubbler and SWConnect devices should recover all location data.

I don't anticipate this maintenance will take longer than 30 minutes. Thanks for your patience.

Security Update: Heartbleed

All,

A security bug was recently found in the OpenSSL software library. SpotWalla.com, along with 50%+ of all companies with an Internet presence, relies upon OpenSSL to secure communications with its customers. Once alerted to this issue, the OpenSSL.org folks quickly patched their software and made it generally available to the public.

SpotWalla.com was patched with the latest OpenSSL libraries last night. I don't have any evidence that SpotWalla.com was compromised in any way, but best practices dictate that we generate and install new SSL certificates. We will take this action tonight when activity subsides.

Additionally, I encourage all users to change their password just in case it was compromised. This is especially important if you're using the same password to secure multiple sites. For instance, you're using the same password for SpotWalla.com and online banking.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks.

*** Upgrade Sunday, February 2nd ***

SpotWalla.com will be upgraded on Sunday, February 2nd between 9:00 PM and 10:00 PM America/Chicago time. This will be a relatively quick upgrade. I don't anticipate it will take longer than 15 minutes.

Here's what you can expect after the upgrade...

  • Elevation in both meters and feet wherever it's displayed.
  • For those who view trips, location pages and device widgets, the viewer's local date/time will be displayed wherever location data is shown. For instance, in the left-side pane's Last Location area and in the popup windows that appear when clicking a location on the map.
  • Over the years SpotWalla has added support for a lot of different devices. While some of the device makers offer email notifications as part of their services (e.g. SPOT and DeLorme), some don't (e.g. Bubbler GPS and SWConnect). I don't want to brag, but SpotWalla's email notifications are fully customizable. You define the format of the message, what information is contained in the message and even where that information appears.
  • SPOT has added battery status information to the data transmitted from their devices. SpotWalla will collect this information and display it where applicable.

Y'all have fun and enjoy.
